A Legacy of Hope: Rose's Story

When Rose lost her husband, she suddenly found herself responsible for providing for her family. Desperate to keep her daughter in high school, she turned to brewing illegal alcohol to earn an income. It was a decision that eventually led to prison in Kenya.

While incarcerated, Rose made a life-changing decision of her own. She resolved that if she were given another opportunity, she would build a different future for herself and her family.

When she was released from prison, that opportunity came through Building Families For Tomorrow.

Soon after entering BFFT's residential family restoration program, tragedy struck again. Rose's daughter passed away unexpectedly, leaving Rose to raise her two young grandchildren. Once again, she faced an uncertain future—but this time, she did not face it alone.

From Prison to Economic Independence

Through counseling, biblical discipleship, vocational training, and business mentoring, Rose learned tailoring and developed the skills she needed to support her family. After completing the residential program, BFFT helped her establish a home and launch her own tailoring business.

Rose's determination quickly transformed opportunity into independence.

Within a year, she purchased a small plot of land and built a traditional home with space for both her family and her tailoring shop. She later added rental space to generate additional income, purchased a larger piece of land, and expanded her business by opening a second tailoring shop and employing staff.

Transforming the Next Generation

Today, Rose owns property, operates successful businesses, and continues to provide for her family.

Perhaps most meaningful of all, the two grandchildren she once feared might not have the opportunities their mother dreamed of are now both attending college.

Rose's journey demonstrates what can happen when a woman leaving prison is given the opportunity, skills, and support to rebuild her life. Her transformation did not end with employment or financial independence. It changed what was possible for the next generation of her family.

Rose's story is a powerful reminder that restoring one mother can transform an entire family. What began with a second chance has become a legacy of hope—and an example of how family restoration can help break generational cycles of poverty and incarceration in Kenya.
