A Second Chance: Irene's Story

Irene's journey from 17 years in prison in Kenya to an independent life as a business owner is a remarkable story of perseverance, faith, and restoration.

At just fourteen years old, Irene married and soon became the mother of two daughters.

When her youngest child was only seven months old, Irene's life changed forever. Her husband, determined to marry another woman, enlisted two men to help kill her. Irene was stabbed multiple times and fought for her life. During the struggle, one of the attackers was killed.

Irene turned herself in to the authorities. She was sentenced to death, a sentence that was later reduced to life imprisonment. After spending 17 years in prison, Irene received a presidential pardon in 2020 and was finally given the opportunity to begin again.

Rebuilding Life After Prison in Kenya

While Irene was incarcerated, her daughters were raised by their grandmother. The effects of Irene's imprisonment extended into the next generation. Her oldest daughter left school in sixth grade, married at a young age, and later entrusted her own child to her grandmother's care.

When Irene was released from prison, she entered Building Families For Tomorrow's six-month residential family restoration program.

Through counseling, biblical discipleship, vocational training, and mentoring, Irene began rebuilding her life and preparing for independence. She learned tailoring and developed the practical skills she needed to earn an income and support her family.

After completing the residential program, Irene launched her own tailoring business in a nearby town. She later purchased a small piece of land overlooking a river, where she grows food to help provide for her family.

Restoring a Family and Building a New Future

Today, Irene is supporting herself, caring for her granddaughter, and continuing to build a stable and independent life. In an unexpected blessing, she also welcomed a young son, Moses, into her family.

Her journey illustrates both the challenges women can face after long-term incarceration and what can become possible when they have the skills, support, and opportunity to rebuild.

Looking back, Irene describes her life as a testimony of God's grace and the power of a second chance.

After 17 years in prison, Irene didn't simply need a place to go—she needed a pathway forward. Through faith, vocational training, family restoration, and the opportunity to earn a sustainable income, what once seemed like the end of her story became the beginning of a new one.
